Former Arrears

Money / Coins

When giving up your Council tenancy you should ensure that your rent account is clear.  If you are unable to clear your accounts, we shall expect you to repay them after you have gone.  We will contact you during your Notice Period to discuss repayment.

After you have left, if the arrears are not paid, we will write to you to request payments.  If payments are not then made, then we will actively pursue the former rent arrears using a number of methods.

We will actively pursue all former arrears using a number of methods:

  • Telephone calls to the new home

  • Letters
  • Contacting family members or your employer

  • Visits
  • Referring the debt to a Debt Collection Agency

  • Tracing agencies
  • Attachment of earnings

We will also explain to customers that they may experience problems when applying for another home from the Council or another landlord.

All former arrears can be paid using the same payment methods as for current rent payments.  Please refer to the rent payments section for details of ways to pay.
