Tristar Homes Encourages 5 a day

TRISTAR HOMES ENCOURAGE 5-A-DAY

Staff at Tristar Homes are encouraging customers and local residents in Newtown to eat their recommended 5 a day fruit and vegetables with their proactive healthy living initiative.

Tristar, in partnership with Newtown Community Resource Centre, are running a '5-a-day bag-a-bargain' initiative every Wednesday between 11am and 12pm.

Supporting the local economy, the Tristar volunteers are working with Food Chain North East who source fruit, vegetables and salad from local North East farmers providing seasonal fruit, vegetables, potatoes and free range eggs.

Customer Involvement Officer, Fiona McCulloch, is hopeful that the scheme will roll out further to all Tristar neighbourhoods. She said; "Customers and local residents can put their order in on week and pick it up the following week for £2.80 per bag which works out to be approximately 20p per piece of fruit/veg! It is an excellent and affordable way to maintain a healthy diet and eat the freshest, varied seasonal vegetables for local farmers.

Fiona added;
We can also make up Christmas hampers, include recipe cards, anything to encourage a healthier lifestyle."

Since the initiative launched in Newtown in December, the scheme has sold over 1100 bags of fresh fruit and vegetables and numbers are still rising.

The choice of bags include 5 different fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables and is proving extremely popular, especially with one Tristar customer, Mr Goodman. He said; "The bags are an absolute bargain and you never really know what you are going to get as it depends on what is in season, which is great as it keeps it varied. I have saved so much money getting my groceries this way and I know that I am getting my 5-a-day so it's great!"

The 'bag-a-bargain' is available to anyone across Stockton and due to demand, Tristar are now looking into extending the areas so that more people across the borough can benefit
