Tristar Homes manage two main forms of tenancies for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Introductory Tenancies and Secure Tenancies.
Introductory Tenancies
If you have not been a Council tenant in Stockton before, you will usually sign an Introductory Tenancy Agreement.
The features of this tenancy are:
- It is for a trial period of 12 months.
- If you break the conditions of your tenancy in a serious way, for example you do not pay your rent or commit anti-social behaviour, the courts have to give possession of your home if we have followed the correct procedure in applying for a court order.

Secure Tenancies
Most tenancies are secure. If you are a secure tenant and are moving to another property under the Council's transfer scheme, you will remain a secure tenant.
The features of this tenancy are:
- It is for life, or until you choose to terminate the tenancy or the Council has to apply to the County Court to end your tenancy because you have broken the terms of your tenancy in a serious way
- If you do break the conditions of your tenancy in a serious way, for example you do not pay your rent or commit anti-social behaviour, the court will only order an eviction if they believe that it is reasonable for this to happen. The court will take into account your actions and also the way in opportunities given to you to correct your breach of tenancy conditions.
You have increased rights, such as:
- The Right to Buy
- The Right to Exchange
- The Right to take in lodgers.
